A Sense of Dread in Idaho’s Remote Wilderness

A few years ago, three friends embarked on a backpacking trip to Rainbow Lakes in Idaho on June 16, 2022. Despite the remote location, approximately 15 miles from the nearest person, they set out on the trailhead without encountering any fellow hikers. Their journey took them up the mountain and into the valley, where they navigated through snow-covered trees using GPS to reach the campground.

Upon setting up camp and building a shelter to weather the night, a sense of unease settled over the group. As darkness fell and the wind picked up, they noticed a strange blue light hovering above the trees, gliding silently through the sky just 50 feet above them. Startled by the mysterious phenomenon, they retreated to their tent for safety.

While attempting to sleep, one of the friends heard slow, deliberate footsteps circling their campsite. Sensing a bipedal presence, the unseen visitor seemed to loiter around the tent, occasionally coming within a few feet. The unsettling pacing continued for about 45 minutes, accompanied by gusts of wind that pushed against the tent.

Come morning, the group awoke with a sense of dread lingering in the air. After discussing the eerie events of the night, they ventured outside to investigate the mysterious footsteps they had heard. Discovering only three sets of footprints in the snow, with one solitary track and two paired strides, they found it perplexing that there were no additional footprints nearby.

Feeling unsettled and watched, especially after one friend witnessed two trees moving in an unnatural manner, the group unanimously decided to cut the trip short and leave the area immediately. Despite a parting encounter of a single tree being struck like before, the remainder of their journey back was uneventful, although the lingering sensation of being observed persisted.
